The beauty and aesthetics industry is dominated overwhelmingly by women – more so than any other industry that springs to mind. Many women run their own businesses in this sector, and virtually all employees are women.
Yet….there is a curious phenomenon that, although virtually all of the smaller businesses in this sector (which are the majority) are run and owned by women (the mobile practitioners and the single and dual salons), those of any size are owned either fully or partially by men – almost without deviation.
This has been apparent as we have been targetting potential customers for our advanced skin systems. from thousands of phone calls to single or dual operation skin and beauty salons, women have answered and women have worked within and run the businesses. However, when it comes to salons/clinics with multiple outlets or turnover in excess of £1M, this is an industry where there are barely any players that are not owned wholly or with a majority stake by men! In some cases these men are from Venture Capital firms. and in others private businessmen.
I would like to think that we have a huge sea of creativity, talent and capability, bubbling just under the surface and about to burst forth and take the male predators by storm! The private equity firms are sniffing around: we have already seen them move in and develop the 2 largest clinics in the sector (Sk:n and Destination Skin), and it won’t be long before others are buying up smaller clinics and branding them as one, to compete in the fastest growing markets in the world today – non invasive anti-ageing technology. Let’s demonstrate some girl power and beat them to it!
Whilst SkinFirst are happy to sell our state of the art machines to these big boys (in our endeavour to join them in the upper echelons of corporate activities) we would equally love to see as many sizeable and successful salons (multi-site and National) owned and run by the women who have traditionally been the key operators in this industry. With this in mind, SkinFIrst will be running business training seminars for our clients – showing them how to work smart and grow a large and successful business in the field of aesthtics.
