What is Microsclerotherapy?
Microsclerotherapy is a safe, well established technique used to treat spider veins or thread veins on the legs. It is a relatively straightforward procedure which involves injecting a solution with a very tiny needle into the veins which causes the lining of the vein to breakdown, triggering a healing response which will cause the vein to disappear over time.
Identify the underlying cause
It is important to note that before any microsclerotherapy is undertaken, a full consultation is necessary to identify and access the leg vasculature. It may be necessary to undergo a venous duplex ultrasound scan. This scan will confirm whether there are any hidden, underlying varicose veins which are feeding blood into the thread veins and keeping them open. Failure to treat the underlying cause of the thread veins results in unsuccessful outcomes for the majority of people. This will be discussed during the consultation.
What results can I expect?
The results are not immediate. The veins look worse before they look better and the treatment may need to be repeated at 4-12 week intervals. Most patients see a 60-80% improvement on the appearance of their veins after between 2-5 treatments.
Are the results permanent?
The veins that are successfully treated will not reoccur but we can’t stop new ones from developing which could happen over time after the treatment. Please see the aftercare leaflet for special instructions following a microsclerotherapy treatment.
Prices start from £150 but will depend on severity and number of veins. Sometimes a course of treatments is needed, but all information will be discussed in a free of charge consultation beforehand.
